Why Ayurveda makes us so happy

Freedom, individuality, nature, serenity, respect and belonging through family and relationships - this is the cocktail that makes us happy, according to modern happiness research.

From this point of view, it is particularly interesting to understand why Ayurveda makes us so happy:

  • Freedom

Ayurveda makes us free! Free from the conventions of having to be someone other than our constitution. Free from illness, physical heaviness, inner listlessness or emptiness.

  • Individuality

Ayurveda is an individual way of healing and living that considers and treats each person according to their individual needs. In Ayurveda, we differentiate between the physical and mental parts of the personality, the changeable (vikriti) and the unchangeable (prakriti).

  • Nature

In Ayurveda, living in harmony with nature is the basis of a healthy and happy life. We live in the rhythm of the times of day and seasons (kala), eat mainly regional, organic food (desha) and use the knowledge of the healing power of plants (dravya).

  • Serenity and respect

Ayurveda attributes many psychological qualities to those with a sattvic personality and a strong mind, which have been proven to contribute to happiness: patience, tolerance, appreciation, helpfulness, positive thinking, serenity and a respectful approach to the needs of oneself and others. From an Ayurvedic perspective, humans are social beings whose well-being depends not only on them alone, but also on the state of their environment. A loving relationship with fellow human beings, the environment and nature is therefore the prerequisite for a happy and healthy life

  • Affiliation

Having time for love, family and friends is the decisive factor for happiness in many countries at the top of the international happiness scale - such as Costa Rica, Mexico, Iceland and Denmark. We feel safe and loved as a valuable part of a community. We give and receive happiness by putting our children, parents and friends at the top of our list of values in life.

In addition to all the "soul food" for happiness, the physical level should not be forgotten from an Ayurvedic perspective. Like modern neuromicrobiotics, traditional Ayurvedic medicine also views happiness as a metabolic product:

Only a healthy gut and active metabolism (dhatvagni) can produce happiness hormones (ojas). For this we need fresh, vital substance-rich food (prana ahara) with a naturally sweet quality (madhura vipaka), which we lovingly prepare in a tasty way and eat in a pleasant atmosphere.

It is best to eat this ojas-building food, which suits us individually, in the great outdoors with our family and friends. Then we have all the ingredients for happiness.
